Family Service and
Children’s Aid believes that part of its mission to strengthen children
and families is to provide a variety of prevention and education programs.
These programs help combat drug and alcohol addiction in youth, address
delinquent behavior in juveniles, and prevent child abuse and help parents
raise emotionally and mentally healthy children. |

Breakout
Drug Education
Breakout Drug Education provides school-based alcohol and drug prevention
education for adolescents in grades 6-12. Our
experienced facilitators teach children in an age appropriate way about
the health risks associated with alcohol and drug use, how alcohol and
tobacco advertising influences young people’s choices, and the economics
of drug use. The Breakout Drug Education program helps young people assess
the choices and consequences of using alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, helps
them understand the importance of having peer support and a safety net,
helps them know how to say no to drugs and alcohol, and how to avoid
high-risk situations. Breakout Drug Education staff is available for
outreach to parents, local businesses, and the community at large.
Please call 517.787.7920 for more information or
visit the Breakout Drug
Education Program website. |

Parent
Education
Our Parent Education classes are provided free of
charge and are available to anyone who wants to learn how to become a
better parent. Classes give parents
new techniques and information so they have a better understanding of
their own parenting style, have better communication with their children,
improve their ability to discipline in a positive way, and become the best
parents they can be. We use the Nurturing Parent curriculum and classes
run in six-week cycles that parents can join at any time. Our trained
facilitators cover topics like building empathy in children, fostering
independence, developing age appropriate expectations, maintaining
appropriate roles, barriers to positive parenting, and positive discipline
techniques. Class times are Tuesdays 10am-noon and 6pm-8pm. We offer
specialized workshops for teachers, daycare providers and community
members periodically, and certificates for daycare providers needing proof
of training for licensure are available. Parents must complete an assessment prior to
joining the Parent Education program. Please call 517.787.7920 for more
information. |

Kinship
Care Program
The
Kinship Care program became a part of Family Service & Children’s
Aid in September of 2008. This
program serves to address the needs of our unique kinship families.
Kinship clients are composed of adult caregivers raising children
that are not biologically their own. This
includes adult siblings, grandparents, aunts, and even close family
friends. The program provides
bi-monthly support groups, educational workshops, and intergenerational
celebrations. In addition, Kinship
Care offers outreach services, support, advocacy, case management, and
financial assistance. The
Kinship Care Program requires a referral from the Department of Human
Services. Please call 517.787.7920
